Modern Entertainment Center with Beamed Ceiling

This comprehensive interior woodworking project completely transforms the living room, blending a modern farmhouse aesthetic with ingenious storage solutions and bold pops of color.

The work is divided into two main areas that tie together beautifully through their color palette:

  • The Media Wall: Features floor-to-ceiling shiplap paneling painted in a crisp white. It integrates a modern electric fireplace, a custom niche for a soundbar, and a flat-screen TV. The focal point is a wooden floating shelf finished with a teal stain that allows the beautiful wood grain to show through. This piece’s best-kept secret is that it functions as a hidden pull-out drawer, offering highly functional storage without disrupting the minimalist aesthetic.

  • The Tray Ceiling: A custom tray ceiling was designed incorporating wood planks painted in the exact teal shade as the shelf, creating perfect visual cohesion. Contrasting against this backdrop are light-toned, natural wood faux beams that bring warmth and texture to the space, complemented by strategically placed recessed lighting.

The Process

Estimated Build Process

  • Design and Framing: Building out the wall framing to safely support the weight of the television and creating the rough openings to house the electric fireplace and soundbar niche. Framing the tray ceiling overhead to achieve the necessary depth.

  • Ceiling Work: Installing the tongue-and-groove panels or wood slats on the ceiling, painted either beforehand or on-site with the custom teal finish. Fabricating hollow faux beams using natural wood (likely pine or fir) finished with a clear or light coat. Mounting the beams to the ceiling and routing the electrical wiring for the recessed lights.

  • Wall Cladding: Installing the white shiplap boards to cover the entire media wall framework, ensuring highly precise cuts around the fireplace insert and recessed niches.

  • Hidden Shelf Fabrication (The Drawer): Constructing the inner drawer box and painting it a solid teal color. Mounting heavy-duty, full-extension telescopic drawer slides directly to the wall’s structural framing. Fabricating the outer shell of the shelf using wood with a pronounced grain pattern, applying a semi-transparent teal stain to highlight the natural texture. The final assembly involved attaching the outer shell to the drawer slide system to ensure a smooth glide and a flush closure, making the piece look exactly like a solid floating beam when shut.
